Can you feel the excitement building? On August 5, the Olympic Torch will make its way into Rio de Janeiro, for the beginning of the Olympic Games. The eyes of the world will be upon Rio for the next two weeks. This is a good way to bring us all together in these troubled times. The people of Illinois, including we here in the Barrington area, will be rooting for the American athletes, especially those from this state, to “bring home the gold.”
At least twenty-two athletes from Illinois have qualified for the United States Team thus far. We’ll see if there are more. Everyone is excited about the team of six people who have trained together at the North Shore Rhythmic Gymnastics Center in Highland Park. It’s the first time in twenty years the United States has had a team for the Rhythmic Gymnastics event.
The United States has at least four people from Illinois on the swimming team. Some of them will compete in multiple events, such as the 4x200-meter Freestyle, the 200-meter Freestyle, and the 400-meter Freestyle. The contender for the 100-meter Breaststroke looks promising, too, as well as the 100-meter Backstroke swimmer. (I am refraining from naming the athletes, because there isn’t space to name them all. If you want to know more about them, here is a link to a story on them and their backgrounds.) And here is a link for the schedule of games.
There are a couple of encouraging athletes on the Track and Field team, also. One of them competed in his first Triathlon at the young age of 8. Another contestant has already participated in the London Olympics in 2012. That kind of experience has got to be an advantage. We also have an ambitious competitor in the Decathlon.
If you like wrestling, you’ll enjoy watching the matches of a couple of wrestlers from our area. One of them has a moving story to tell. We’re represented on the Volleyball team, also. All in all, it’s going to be an exciting two weeks.
The fact that the games are in Rio de Janeiro is just an added bonus. The camera shots, and special features about the area are sure to be a treat for the eyes and the mind. There will probably be some good background music, too.
