Do You Have a Pet Friendly Property?

Other

If you have a pet, be it a dog, a cat, or (a la Napoleon Dynamite), a llama, you want to make your home comfortable for said pet, but at the same time, keep your Barrington area home looking (and smelling) nice. How do you reconcile these two aspects? (Just kidding about the llama, folks! They usually stay outside!)

Most experts will tell you that wall-to-wall carpeting is not recommended if you have pets. It is next to impossible to keep the odors and wear and tear from being the first thing people will notice when they enter your home. Some people just like the look of carpeting, though; so if you have it, make it a low-pile variety, and keep lots of cleaners and fresheners around. Area and strategically placed non-slip scatter rugs can help.

When choosing a hard-surface flooring, take care. Standard hardwood and bamboo are durable, but they may show scratching sooner than something like a nice tile, or even vinyl or linoleum. Some online research can reap you good advice on pet-friendly flooring.

Pets on furniture is a topic with highly individual and varied stances. Since it’s your pet, and your furniture, it’s your call - usually. You just don’t know how far Fido (or Fluffy) will test the rules when you’re out of the house. Just in case, it’s probably a good idea to opt for furniture fabrics that are stain resistant. The newer microfiber fabrics are easily cleaned. If you opt for leather because it’s easy to clean, remember to keep after the sharp nails of your pet, so you don’t get punctures, scratches, or even rips!

A lot of pets love being outside during the day. That’s great! However, you may want to have a special area where you train your pet to go when nature calls. It may even be worth the effort and expense to hardscape the area with something like concrete in order to make it easily maintained. This will keep the rest of your landscape looking (and again, smelling) fresh!

There is a whole industry created around the feeding and watering of pets. You can keep it simple with a bowl for food and one for water, or go whole hog, and get an automatic bowl-filler with portion control. As a matter of fact, you can install a water station that is connected to your water supply, so there are no spills between the sink and the floor. Of course, this can all be surrounded with materials that make it look like part of your decor.
