Summer is officially over, even if the temperatures around the Barrington area are still a little warm. You know what that means. It’s time to clean, fix, and spruce up your house. When you do that, you need to think about whether you are actually improving the value of your property or not.
Naturally, a lot depends on your plans. Do you intend to stay in your house for the foreseeable future, or have you plans to sell your present home and find another? There are some amenities that won’t necessarily improve the value of the property, but they will make things nice for you and your family. In that case, it’s a judgement call. For now, let’s concentrate on things that will tend to make your house more marketable.
Before the weather takes a turn for the worse, as it is wont to do here in the midwest, take a look at your roof. Are any shingles loose, or damaged? A quick repair may save you the cost of a whole new roof in the next year or two. If you already need to replace the roof, now is the time.
While you’re looking high, check the chimney. Is the flashing around it secure and intact? How about the mortar between the bricks? Is it flaking or cracking? You may need to have it re-pointed. Keeping the chimney in good repair is especially necessary if you have any sort of wood or coal-burning fireplaces or stoves in your home. That makes it a safety issue.
Now, check the gutters and downspouts. Be sure they are, first of all, clear of any leaves or other debris. Then, decide if they need any repairs. The gutters should be firmly attached to the house, and slightly sloped toward the downspout. When the snow and ice begin, you will be happy you took care of this chore. Of course, keeping them freshly painted will make your home look nice, too.
The next place to check is your entry areas. Are any porches, decks, steps and stoops in good repair? Could they use a good cleaning, and possibly even painting? Is your front door sturdy and well-kept? Sometimes, a new coat of paint, and some new hardware (hinges, door handles, etc.) can make a startling improvement. If the door seems somewhat rickety, you may want to consider replacing the whole thing, for security reasons, if nothing else.
These are just a few of the areas in which you should be vigilant. Neglecting them can seriously affect the appearance and value of your home. Since the weather will most likely be cooler soon, it’s not too early to make whatever plans are needed to maintain them.
